Panasonic has launched a significant firmware update for its popular mirrorless cameras, the LUMIX S5 II and S5 IIx. Firmware versions 3.0 for the Lumix S5 II and 2.0 for the Lumix S5 IIx bring several noteworthy enhancements, including improvements to cloud storage, video recording capabilities, pre-burst shooting functionality, autofocus performance, and image stabilization features.
Frame.IO is now supported with Lumix S5II and Lumix S5 IIX
A key highlight of these upgrades is the addition of Frame.io connectivity to both LUMIX cameras. This integration enables users to upload proxy video, JPEGs, and RAW files directly to Adobe’s collaborative cloud storage and management platform. Utilizing both Wi-Fi and USB-tethering connections, this feature allows members of production teams to seamlessly share, review, and edit photos and videos captured with the Lumix S5 II and S5 IIx. Users have the flexibility to manually select files for sharing or set them to be shared automatically upon recording.
Record Proxy Video with Lumix S5 II and Lumix S5 IIX
Following the addition of Frame.io compatibility, the firmware update introduces the “record proxy video” function, which generates shareable video files compatible with the Adobe cloud platform. This feature is accessible during MOV recording for both cameras and in ProRes format exclusively on the S5 IIx model. When activated, the camera will concurrently capture a secondary video file, ranging from 4 to 16 Mbps, linked to the original recording and sharing the same filename. The proxy file is stored in the SD Slot 2 memory card and facilitates subsequent post-production workflows. Proxy video functionality is applicable for shooting speeds up to 60p and allows for the independent application of a REAL TIME LUT compared to the original video.
Pre Burst Shooting
Additionally, the firmware update introduces pre-burst shooting functionality, enabling capturing up to 1.5 seconds of footage prior to pressing the shutter release button. Users can choose from three pre-shutter capture presets—0.5, 1, and 1.5 seconds—although this feature is exclusively accessible when utilizing the electronic shutter.
Enhanced AutoFocus Capabilities of Lumix S5 II and Lumix S5 IIX
The firmware update enhances the autofocus capabilities by implementing advancements in AI-driven subject recognition. This upgrade results in improved identification of individual human subjects, particularly in scenarios involving multiple people in the frame, and enhances the differentiation between human subjects and animals. Additionally, the update introduces new subject detection categories, including Cars and Motorcycles.
Enhanced Image Stabilization
Furthermore, videographers will benefit from enhanced image stabilization, as the update introduces a new HIGH mode for E-Stabilization. This mode is designed to address larger shakes typically encountered during mobile shooting. Additionally, the update offers an option to correct perspective distortions that may occur during video recording.
Other enhancements include improved overall operational stability and enhanced picture quality when utilizing Live View Composite mode.
