RØDE has introduced the RØDECaster Video, a versatile console merging a video switcher with audio production capabilities in one compact setup. This device simplifies complex multi-device workflows, providing a streamlined solution for podcasters, video creators, and streamers to manage both video and audio. We had the chance to explore its features over the past few weeks.

The RØDECaster Video combines elements from the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro ISO and RØDECaster Pro II, creating an all-in-one device for both video and audio production. This streamlined setup is designed to deliver the functionality of both systems in a compact, efficient form. In this first-look review, we’ll explore whether it achieves the seamless integration it promises.

Camera Input Features

On the back of the RØDECaster Video, there’s an array of input and output options, including four HDMI inputs and two versatile USB-C ports (USB 4 and 5) for connecting up to six video sources, like USB webcams. The two HDMI outputs allow you to link displays for monitoring and output production, with options to select which video feed you’d like to display (Program, Preview, or Multiview).

Audio Functionality

For audio, this device includes two high-quality and studio grade Neutrik combo jack preamps, offering up to 76dB of gain to power low-output dynamic mics—like the Shure SM7B—without needing a signal booster. It supports XLR mics, instruments, and other gear, and has two versatile USB-C ports (USB 4 and 5) to connect RØDE USB audio devices, including the RØDECaster Pro II, Duo, and various RØDE USB mics like the NT-USB+ and PodMic USB. Additionally, onboard APHEX-powered DSP includes compressors, noise gates, de-essers, and an Aural Exciter for polished audio output.

Other USB Connectivity

Alongside the two versatile USB-C ports, there are three additional USB ports offering distinct functions. USB 1 enables live video streaming paired with multitrack audio. USB 2 connects to the RØDE Central app for device control and configuration and also serves as an extra audio interface. This port is MFi-certified, allowing seamless connection to iPhones or smartphones for audio transfer. USB 3 is dedicated to external storage, supporting hard drives and thumb drives for efficient file management.

Live Streaming and Recording Capabilities

External hard drives can connect to the RØDECaster Video, supporting Isolated Recording (ISO). This lets you capture each of the six video inputs individually, as well as the program feed, into separate H.264/AVC files at up to 1080p30 resolution. Unlike the ATEM Mini ISO, it currently lacks an XML or project file feature for direct NLE import, though it would be a valuable addition. Hopefully, RØDE may incorporate this in a future update, as it offers significant convenience in the ATEM series.

The RØDECaster Video features a microSD card slot that can be used to store videos, images, graphics, and sounds.

You also have an Ethernet connection and WiFi capability thanks to the two dedicated antennas on the back. This setup lets you control the device remotely and stream directly to YouTube or Twitch by entering the Server and Stream Key in the RØDECentral app, eliminating the need for extra software like OBS or Streamlabs.

User Interface and User Experience

At the top, there is a 2-inch touchscreen along with two rotary knobs for menu navigation and adjusting settings such as volume. Additionally, there are six buttons for switching between video sources and seven customizable buttons for scenes.

When you connect a display to the Program or Multiview output, you can see all your sources and audio levels clearly. Additionally, there’s a useful recording window that indicates whether your recording is active and how much storage is available on your connected drive.
